Stage 29a. Altopascio to Fucecchio. Peaceful woods and medieval towns.

After finding a stamp in the friendly Altopascio Municipio next to the church, and appreciating the small, but well-preserved medieval part of the town, a stretch on tarmac eventually brought me to the mixed woodlands through which the Via passes for much of this stage.  It was a relief after the unremitting road walking yesterday.  Woodsmoke drifted across the path which occasionally broke free passing vineyards and olive groves.

I trod ancient cobbles for a stretch
and had occasional reminders of the region's marshier past.
before lunch at Ponte a Cappiano
and a stretch along a canal through typical Tuscan scenery,
before reaching Fucecchio, with its pleasant little piazza.
