As a result of a slight error on my planning spreadsheet (I know! So unlike me!) what was billed as a rest day had to be used for walking, and I chose to cheat slightly to give myself a rest, by only doing the first 14km of the stage which officially ends in Pavia. I'm trying to justify it by drawing attention to the fact that I have already travelled back and forth over that section many times since arriving in Pavia and taking the train every day, and that it's the journey that counts, and I'm hoping to get away with it.
Otherwise a largely uneventful day, totally failing again to find a pilgrim stamp, but enjoying a large coffee and chat with the friendly barman of a cafe on the main road in Gropello Cairoli. And so to the station at Villanova, handily positioned 2.5km outside the town, and, as with many of the stations on this line, well-provided with facilities.
Wind assist from a delicious cool breeze at my back helped, and the path followed, for the last time, the Cavour, which is a massive and essential piece of engineering throughout the region. It disappears into the Ticino just outside Pavia.
